National Demonstration Base for Talent and Intelligence Introduction of New Poplar Varieties Breeding

Established by the Research Institute of Forestry of Chinese Academy of Forestry (CAF), the Demonstration Base of Intensive Cultivation Technology for Poplar New Variety Selection and Breeding was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2020 as a State Demonstration Base for Foreign Intellectual Resources Introduction. The Base was named by the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs as the State Demonstration and Promotion Base for Foreign Intellectual Achievements Introduction of Poplar New Variety Selection and Breeding in 2002, and re-named as State Demonstration and Promotion Base for Foreign Intellectual Resources Introduction of Poplar Plantation Intensive Cultivation in 2007, and State Demonstration and Promotion Base for Foreign Intellectual Achievements Introduction of intensive Cultivation Technology for Poplar New Variety Selection and Breeding in 2014 respectively.


The Base focuses on the selection and breeding of improved poplar varieties and the efficient cultivation of fast-growing plantations. Based on introducing and preserving black poplar genetic resources abroad, with consideration of current status of poplar resources and breeding research in China, the Base has established long-term cooperation relationships with research institutions in Italy, Germany, France, the United States, etc., carried out long-term cooperation with more than 20 foreign experts, and introduced/studied foreign poplar varieties selection and breeding technologies. It has obtained 11 new plant variety rights, nine national-level improved varieties, and won the Second Prizes (twice) of National Award for Progress in Scientific and Technological and Chinese Government Friendship Award once. Large-scale demonstration and promotion of improved poplar varieties has been carried out, which is of great significance to improving the yield and quality of poplar plantations in China.


Situated in eastern Hebei Province, the Base uses introduced poplar varieties to breed more than 2 million high-quality seedlings, with emphasis on building fast-growing and high-yield experimental demonstration plantations for timber production. In terms of improved variety selection, demonstration and promotion, and technology integration, the Base has carried out a series of scientific research and demonstration work. With the strong support of local governments and forestry bureaus, the Base worked with platforms such as the Chinese Academy of Forestry, State Key Laboratory of Tree Genetics and Breeding, National Innovation Alliance for Forest Genomes and Genetic Engineering, and the Chinese Poplar Committee of the Chinese Society of Forestry, and trained nearly 30 forestry secondary school students, college students, and graduate students. It has held six domestic poplar academic seminars, 12 on-site demonstrations or technical training workshops, with a total of 800 participants. At present, driven by the Base, a total of 100,000 mu (about 6700ha) of fast-growing and high-yield poplar plantations have been established in a few provinces.


It is committed to research on the selection and breeding of improved poplar varieties and efficient cultivation of fast-growing plantations. Through foreign intellectual resources introduction, demonstration and promotion of research achievements, the Base aims to improve the production and quality of poplar plantations, effectively promote the upgrading and sustainable development of the poplar industry, playing an important role in supporting the construction of ecological civilization and beautiful China, and building a moderately prosperous society in all respects.
