The Chinese Academy of Forestry plays a vital role in scientific and technological innovation on forestry and grassland in China. Forest Ecology And Environment

Remarkable research progresses have been made in forest cultivation, ecology of plantations, forest ecological programs, shelterbelts, forest ecosystem observation, and etc.Natural forest protection and ecological restoration.The study of Chinese Academy of Forestry on natural forest protection and ecological restoration has tackled the main technology issues in natural dynamic disturbances and conservation, restoration of typical degraded natural forests, landscape restoration and spatial management, etc., and presented a model of restoring degraded natural forests. In addition, eco-friendly harvest technology considering both the common technical standards and the appropriate technical mode for specific forest types was developed for logging and regenerating natural forests in northeast China.

Tree Genetic Improvement

For six decades, the Chinese Academy of Forestry has successively studied on the genetic improvement of Populus, Cunninghamia lanceolata, Larix dahurica, Pinus massoniania, paulownia, eucalyptus, acacia, Hippophae rhamnoides, Juglans, Camelia oleifera and etc., and successfully provided/cultivated many new advanced varieties (clones/ families), which have been applied extensively in forestry construction. In particular, our research on Populus genetics has generated comprehensive products both theoretically and practically and shifted from pure traditional methods to the combination of molecular biology.

Silviculture

Through carrying out comprehensive surveys on the natural forests of Abies fabri, Pinus yunnanensis and Larix dahurica in southwestern and northeastern China, the scientists of Chinese Academy of Forestry have clarified their composition, structures, growth, forest types and regeneration rules and provided plans for their management, harvest and regeneration. Long-term study was conducted on the cultivation, and amelioration of secondary forests in the north and enclosed conservation methods were adopted. Aerial seeding for certain species was studied and applied in an area of more than 8 million ha.

Forest Resources Management

The application of remote sensing (RS) in monitoring and managing forest resources was initiated in early 1980s’, when Chinese Academy of Forestry developed the software for processing RS data and used space RS data to map the forest distribution and stock volume estimation in Linjiang, Jilin. In a succession afterwards, terrestrial resource satellite TM, SAR, GIS, GPS were applied in forest resource management. Nowthe Chinese Academy of Forestryhas established an integrated approach combining RS, GIS and GPS for monitoring forest resources, environment, disasters, etc.

Forest Protection

Numerous research findings and progresses have been obtained in forest protection against forest diseases, pests and forest fire and applied in practices.Technologies and systems have been developed in preventing and controlling Dendrolimus spp., bamboo locust, Hippota dorsalis, Matsucoccus matsumurae, pine shoot insects, Saperda calcarata, Apocheima cinerarius, Dendroctonus valens, Hyphantria cunea, Gilpinia lipuensis, pine wilt disease, poplar canker, paulownia witch’s broom disease, bacterial wilt of eucalyptus and etc. A shift from individual target control into integrated and ecological control was accomplished. Microorganisms and natural enemies were studied with priority. The Chinese Academy Forestry has invented the first Bt pesticide in China and continuously developed and applied highly virulent bacteria strains.

Wetland Restoration

Aiming at addressing major national ecological construction needs, the Chinese Academy of Forestry has formed its research team of wetland restoration, which strategically focused on the key technical research of wetland restoration, achieving numerous original innovations and significant breakthroughs in areas such as wetland restoration, enhancement of wetland purification functions, and wetland assessment. These achievements have been widely applied and promoted throughout the country.

Desertification Combating

The Chinese Academy of Forestry has been actively engaged in desertification cambating and control research since the early 1950s. Over the past fifty years, continuous efforts across several generations have led to pioneering breakthroughs in the basics and technologies of desertification combating. These achievements have been widely applied in practice, resulting in substantial ecological, social, and economic benefits and integrated into national-level strategic studies and extensively utilized in major ecological projects, providing crucial technological support for desertification control and ecological construction in sandy areas in China, and offering technical support for the Chinese government to fulfill the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification.

Grass Seed Industry & Grassland Protection and Restoration

As the largest terrestrial ecosystem in China, grassland provides crucial ecological functions for water conservation, soil retention, wind prevention, sand fixation, nitrogen storage, carbon fixation, and biodiversity conservation. Ecological restoration of grassland plays an important role in ecosystem governance. Grass seeds are the "chip" for grassland ecological restoration and related industry development.

Wood Science and Technology

Fruitful scientific research has been carried out in the fields of wood structure, wood physics and drying, wood mechanical properties, wood chemistry and adhesives, and wood cell wall principal component aggregate structure.In terms of wood structure, research has been focused on the identification of wood species and wood products, the quality detection and evaluation of waterlogged archaeological wood, the DNA barcodes for wood accurate identification, and the intelligent and rapid identification based on wood images.

Forest Product Chemistry

Research on chemical utilization of wood has been carried out and techniques in intensified hydrolysis, heat recovery, gas and power generation from wastes, and gas-phase and atmospheric-pressure production of furfuryl alcohol.R&D on citric acid-specific active carbon was conducted and achieved that more than 50% of the production were 2-10 mm aperture-volume active carbon.

Forestry Machinery

From the early days of the its establishment to 1965, the Chinese Academy of Forestry has made over 20 scientific breakthroughs. From 1978 to 2000, scientific achievements, such as forestry sprinkler irrigation machinery, KDZ tree planting machine, artificial rainfall machine, lightweight power digging machine, and self-propelled seedling changing technology, won the Award of National Science Conference, Liangxi Forestry Science and Technology Award and other awards at provincial level. A number of scientific studies and key equipment with application prospects have been successively developed, which has significantly improved the development and upgrading of forestry machinery technology and equipment.
